Chapter Eleven

Bill tucked Granny into bed. As he kissed her cheek, he took an extra moment to cherish the feel of her. What if he hadn't been there? What if she'd been alone like that all night? She would have eventually let go. Might have fallen the rest of the way down.

He strode to the kitchen, Lindsay following, and pulled out two half-gallons of ice cream. He had to do something to take his mind off the what-ifs. "Chocolate or vanilla?" he asked.

"You can eat?"

"I have to do something to forget the image of her sprawled there, hanging on with one hand."

Lindsay sank into a chair at the table. "I can't believe this happened. She was fine last week. Now she's had three accidents in one week."

"I'm thankful I came when I did."

Her spine snapped straight like a sail catching the wind. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"Not what you're thinking. I know you've been taking good care of her."

She deflated once again. "I hate this, you know."

He put his hand over her hand and squeezed. There was no way he could see her so dejected and not comfort her. "I know. I'm sorry."

"You really are, aren't you?"

"Yes. I see how much you two love each other. It'll be hard on both of you."

He released her hand and went about making two ice cream sundaes. She never had given her preference, but he remembered that she used to love chocolate.

Neither of them spoke. But he didn't particularly feel the need to. He enjoyed her company. Even just her presence.

When the sundaes were ready, he took them to the table and sat across from her.

After several bites, she said, "I didn't mean for you to make mine. But thanks."

"My pleasure."

"So, I guess you'll have to adjust to having Granny with you."

"Not much." Although if he were totally honest, he would admit being a bit fearful.

"What about your social life?"

"I stay pretty busy at the lab."

"So you've become a workaholic?"

He sensed a trap having to do with Granny's care. "Not really. I don't work outrageous hours. But I don't socialize much, either."

"Why?"

"I've never been very social, you know that." Not that he'd wanted to be that way. Life happened to send him down that path.

"I imagine you fit in with your colleagues."

"That's true. It's been one thing I love most about my job."

She pushed the ice cream around in the bowl. "Don't you miss having a family?"

"Don't you?" he fired back.

Her gaze darted to his. "I have one—my dad, Gregory, the boys and Richard when he's home."

"I have Granny. And I'll love having her live with me."

She didn't respond other than to take a bite of ice cream with chocolate sauce.

"I'll bring her to visit you, if you'd like," he said. "And you can come see us."

She nodded with no enthusiasm at all, then reached for a napkin. The holder was empty.

He hopped up to refill it.

"I could have done that. But thanks."

"You take care of everyone else day in, day out. You need someone to do something for you for a change.
